A happy sigh of relief

After spending nearly an hour trying to login to the UOL External Website to check my examinations results, I finally manage to login! I was staring at the “Service temporary unavailable” and “Application error” for a long time before the server finally decides to let me in. o.O

Come to think of it, I am so glad I’m a blogger because I can check back on how I feel last year when I got my results. It’s really fantastic for people like me who has a memory chipboard that can only “record” 48 hours of my life. So apparently, the results are early by a week this year. I’m happy and I think I did better than the year before. =D

A big Congratulations to everyone who passed the exams! Did you just breathe a happy sigh of relief my dear friends?

Does this spells the end of my school life? Maybe not. We shall see.

Serif font for statistical tables is a bad choice

Frankly speaking, who on earth decided to use Serif fonts for statistical tables? The people who type, choose the font and print these tables have surely not used them at all. My verdict: It’s extremely difficult to read, especially when we are rushing for time during the examinations. The tiny curly numbers never fail to make me dizzy. I always take a few moments to reread the numbers again because I tend to read them wrongly. Please tell me I am not the only one who has this problem. I swear it looks a lot worse on the actual paper than the photo. It’s magnify in the photo. I feel like I’m looking at a hundred tiny worms squirming on my paper. Yes, it’s that bad.

The worst lecturer I’ve ever met

I’ve to say this new year started off in the least expected way. I guess some Snarkers like Cherlynn or Chien would know, it is not something I wish to repeat again. My mood has mostly been on the gloomy side the entire week. I managed to cheer myself up by doing some retail therapy and this was what I ordered from Forever21.

Tank tops are my favourites and did I mention the fact that I’m a jacket/sweater collector now? Forever21 has the most gorgeous outerwear! It makes me wish we have winter in Singapore. I haven’t been shopping much other than that and nothing exciting in my life either. School has been busy. I’ve lots of revisions and assignments to catch up before my final mocks in March and I’m trying to squeeze out some time to do my revision. Speaking of which, I think I’ve a low level of tolerance towards school related issues lately.

There’s this particular lecturer that I absolutely cannot stand at all. I just wish he will stop bragging about how good he is. He’s not approachable (and I think that’s an extremely serious problem if you are a teacher), unfriendly and shows a bad attitude to his students. I would describe him as one of the most “insufferable” lecturers I’ve ever came across. When will he ever know that giving the wrong answer doesn’t mean that one is not listening in class? I gave up asking questions in class because he does not answer my question at all. He goes on and on about his own way of solving the question and did not give me a satisfactory reply. I find it a waste of time to post questions in class since I wouldn’t get a reply that answers my question anyway. He’s too persistent on the fact that his way of solving the question is always right.

The fact that he brags about how good his answer and his notes are in every single lesson makes me want to puke. I have to say his notes aren’t one of the greatest. I’ve seen way better notes produce by others but then again, it’s subjective since others may find his notes good. All I wish for is for him to stop showing this “know-it-all-best-lecturer-in-the-world” attitude in class. It’s frustrating for me to see the way he condemns a student because he or she can’t answer one of his questions.

He dislike students talking in his class which is understandable but here’s the problem, he once said “If you are talking about the question, you can ask me. If you are talking about anything else, please get out of the class.”. I understand the latter but why aren’t we allowed to ask the one sitting beside us about the question we are working on if you don’t understand his explanation? I don’t see the point in asking him the question again since like I said, he won’t give us an answer/explanation to our question.

Dear Mr. Lecturer, just in case you don’t know, we are not in the army. We do not have to reply “Yes, sir” loud and clear every time you asked a question. We are not your soldiers and you don’t command me to do anything. You asked a question, we reply (that’s if we wish to) but stop insisting us to reply like we are in the army! Have you ever read the feedback forms we left for you? Maybe you should since I think it will do you good. Having years of experience in the teaching industry doesn’t make you a good lecturer and showing that “I-am-king” attitude in class doesn’t make us respect you either.

Twitpic of an even busier week

To convince myself that I’m still hardworking, I decided to continue the “twitpic of the week” posts. I will be posting a photo collage of what I’ve done over the past week to fill up the “empty days” I didn’t blog about previously. My half mocks will start on 30 November thus I’m trying my best not to procrastinate and start reading the huge pile of notes. I’ve accumulated quite a substantial amount of reading which means I’ll basically be staring at my notes for the next few weeks.

On a very random note, I’ve officially broke my first mug in the bathroom today. I am usually very careful when handling glass but I’m such a blockhead this morning. If you haven’t notice, I’ve also increased the font size on Amour Chaleur because my vision is getting from bad to worse. Bigger text makes reading easier for me and hopefully for you as well.

Anyway, I was a happy user of Snaptu till the application decided to disappear from my INQ mini yesterday. No matter how many times I’ve tried, it refuses to reinstall so I switched to Twim now. I’m going to pray hard it continues to work until I get my iphone (hopefully) next year. Speaking of which my LG Viewty is still alive but I’ve neglected it. It’s sitting quietly in one of my drawers now. I might switch back to my Viewty next month because as much as I dislike touch screen phones, I still missed it.

I just sold my first illustration

I put my first illustration of pandas up for sale 3 days ago and I’m glad to announce that it has been sold to dear Hannah. Thanks Hannah for bringing the pandas home. I’m looking forward to what you’ve planned out for them.

On an extremely random note, I applied for a transfer of class from Information System & Organisations to Management Mathematics yesterday. I made the decision during my ISO class. I have absolutely no idea what the lecturer was talking about. The tons of theories are just piling up and killing me. It was a quick process, I just filed up a white form, paid 20 bucks and I rolled right out of the class into another’s. I didn’t roll out literally of course. =p

Anyway, I’m still looking for more contestants for the Site Glamour Contest. Pandas for sale

I got my results today and I pass all 4 subjects. =D I’ve a morning class today and I login to check at 7am in the morning. Surprising, the results were already posted at about 2am. I got a message from my friend at 2am telling me that she has passed all her papers. I only saw the message the next morning when I woke up. Anyway, I was freaking out when I keyed in my particulars to get the exams results. My first try was denied as I keyed in the wrong candidate number. Thank god the second attempt worked.

So here’s the results for my UOL academic year 2008/2009:

I’m really glad I pass my Banking and Finance, but wasn’t pleased with MA and CF. I could have worked just a little harder to get another 2 more marks and that would make so much difference. The Microeconomics paper was the easiest one I’ve sat for but I did not manage to do well for it. I shall work even harder this year. I’m aiming for at least 60 marks in all 4 papers I’m sitting for this year. I wish to graduate with at least an Upper Second Class Honours.

On a side note, there’s a John Little Sales for card members from 1st to 3rd September. Thus, mum and I decided to pop by to check out the sales.

Lunch

One thing I miss about school is having lunch. I hate to admit it but during my holidays, I tend to wake up in the afternoon so I usually skipped my lunch. After school started, I wake up at about 10am when I have afternoon classes. I have my lunch at home before going to school. Mum cooked fish fillet, harshbrown and eggs for lunch. It’s been a really long time since I last ate such a fabulous meal.

Talking about school, my first Audit class went great. The lecturer is very interesting and told us quite a bit of interesting things. One thing which I find ironic is that most of us (the Accountancy students) do not know why Debit is DR (with the R) and credit is CR. Where did the R from DR came from? =p I’m so glad to say that there are finally things I know which Chewy doesn’t. Chewy is a much better and intelligent student as compared to me. I’m rather inspired by something the lecturer told us during the class.

Life is short. Enjoy it. Everyday is an interesting day.

He told us to enjoy going for classes. Thinking about it, I can’t remember when is the last time I enjoyed and looked forward to attending classes. I think it was 2 years back while I was still in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. That was the time when I truly felt school was enjoyable. I’m happy waking up early for school, meeting my friends in the morning, having lunches together and working on projects. I missed those times. Anyway, the way that particular lecturer conducts his classes makes me remember the stuff he had said.

I am taking Financial Reporting, Information Systems & Organisation and Management Science Methods as well. ISO was boring. The problem is not with the lecturer. He’s nice, friendly and easy going. But the facts is just dry and dull. I can’t remember how many times I doze off during the first lesson. This is bad. I should sit next to the windows in the future. This will reduce the probability of falling asleep in class.

Enough about the classes, I’m extremely happy to say that I have completed my first official client’s project. The illustration of the man is based on the actual photo of the site owner. He’s a good friend of Bee Keng. I have enjoyed myself tremendously working on this project. This is my first time drawing an illustration based on a real life photograph. anda:

Site Glamour Mascot

I mentioned about holding a Site Glamour Contest a few weeks back. I’ve set up the contest page. I took a few suggestions and made some changes to the contest. By the way, registration opens on 31st August! I need to do a bit of advertising for it. =D The blue bubbles “thing” you see on the left is the mascot of the contest. It is a robot not a dog. Chewy insisted it looks like a dog. Anyway, I think it’s so adorable that I use Miss Bubbles for my new twitter background as well. LOL! This is called “killing 2 birds with 1 stone”?

Sunshine after the rain?

I thought I’ll post a short note here. I’ll be away until March 11 for my final mocks, I’m actually already having my exams now. So I wouldn’t be too active here until after my paper on the 11th. I’m still rather alive at Twitter, so you can find me there. I’ve been cracking my head for the next layout but still can’t make a good one I like. The header image is more or less completed (I think some of you had a sneak preview) . But I just can’t seem to fit the content background and navigation into the design. Nevermind, I shall worry about that later.

And something to add this short post, I took this last evening (click to see full size photo). It’s been raining almost everyday and it’s my first time seeing the sunset behind those dark clouds. Perhaps this might meant that I’m going to see sunshine after my exams?

Porcelain Heels

New Monalisa Glasses

Before I start one of my little “talks of the day” again. Have a look at the tiny shoes on the left. It was a gift from mum when we went “exploring” last Friday. We walked from Lavender (to collect my new passport) all the way to Bugis and we chance about this pottery shop that sell beautiful potteries and household wares. I just happen to saw this pair of porcelain shoes on sales at SGD 4.90 and it’s a beauty. I don’t wear such heels (to be exact, I don’t really wear heels at all) so I think I’ll have one of these at home to admire.

And surprise surprise… I got myself new glasses with the GST credits from the government. I’m contributing to the economy (this is my excuse for everything now). I got these beautiful Monalisa glasses for SGD 200 (click on the thumbnail to view the full size photo), I love them even though they make me look like a nerd, the lenses are a bit too large for my face but please tell me I look okay. I am starting to feel that the frame is a bit too large but I still love it a lot. It has little crystals at the side. The colour is wrong in the photo though, it’s more metallic purplish pink rather than red and it isn’t as bright as the photo looks. Mr Chewy isn’t going to like it. He hate me in framed glasses. I use to wear frame-less glasses in the past. I place the nerdy photo of myself under the cut, I don’t wish to scare you off you know.

Please be forewarn that the “talk of the day” starts here. Okay, so I noticed I hadn’t been blogging this week. Let’s just say nothing much happen for the week other than constantly mugging for the exams. I wish examinations would just disappear from the education sector. I would prefer students being evaluated based on projects, team work and their characters rather than testing how good they are at memorising names and numbers. That’s the thing about studying Finance (and maybe some other subjects as well). For example in CF and POBF, there are tons of models to study and their names are darn hard to remember. Jensen Mecking, Brickley, Netter, John Linter and the list just goes on. There are so many names that I couldn’t remember which is which and even if I did, I mess up the years associated with each of the models. A good student doesn’t necessary mean that they have a good memory for such things. I doubt we ever need to know these when we are in the workforce in the future (unless I’m working as a teacher in that area of course).

It’s pathetic when I think of the way education is. When we are taking a private degree, the only strength your lecturers can see in you is how hard working you are and how good your memory is. They don’t ever ever realise other strengths in you. The tag line is “if you don’t understand, memorise it”. I mean what’s the point? I don’t get it. I regretted choosing this path. It’s making me dislike school, making me doubt the existence of humanity. I don’t enjoy studying now. All these hardcore memorisation work is taking a toll on me, it has taken away all the joys of schooling, learning new things and interacting with people. I’m not learning, I’m just throwing those stuff into a human hard disk. And can someone tell me what’s the purpose of this? Please enlighten me. I don’t even know why I’m doing what I’m doing now. :cry:
