I was offered a chance to try Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion last month. I think it is common knowledge that I am an avid fan of beauty products. Hence, I took up this opportunity to test a new product I have never tried before. Skin MD Natural has kindly offered to send me a bottle of their shielding lotion1 together with brochures and a few sachets of samples2. The shielding lotion is multi-purpose and can be used on the face, hands and body. It also comes with sunscreen SPF 15 which I had purchased myself from local stores because I wanted to see how well both of them worked together.
According to Skin MD Natural, the shielding lotion works differently as compared to conventional moisturiser because it keeps moisture-robbing irritants away from the skin while the proprietary “super” humectants hydrate the skin throughout the day. This makes me even more eager to try out this lotion since I have a problem with dehydrated and oily skin ever since I am on the acne.org regimen 2 years ago.

Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion
I have been using these lotions for a month as facial moisturisers3 and this is how I feel about it:
Fragrance & Texture
Both lotions are fragrance free but I feel that it has a slight smell of sunscreen, even for the normal lotion without any SPF. The smell does not really bothers me since it is quite faint. Personally, I like it this way and prefer my skincare products without any added artificial fragrance due to my sensitive skin condition. The texture and consistency of the lotion with SPF is thicker than the normal lotion. I would prefer the texture of the normal lotion since it is much lighter and easier to apply.

Texture and consistency of the lotions
Moisturising and oil control factor
I feel that the lotions are able to balance out the moisture and oil on my face such that it is not too matt and keep me looking fresh through out the day. It gets absorb quickly, non-greasy and my face does not feel oily after application. I have to say this is one of the lotions with the best oil control. My face stays dewy through out the day without my usual dose of oil control powder.
With my daily use of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide for my acne, dry and peeling skin is a major issue for me. Honestly speaking, these lotions are not miracle products that transform your skin overnight. It takes time to see results. During the first week of usage, I did not see any significant improvements. From the second week onwards, I started using them twice a day (SPF in the morning and normal lotion at night) and noticed lesser peelings and itching from the dryness. My skin feels well-moisturised instead of being over-moisturised.
Fading of post acne scars
In addition, I have also noticed my acne scars fading, even some of the extremely old scars have started to lighten. It might be due to the SPF shielding lotion I am applying every morning in addition to the other ingredients like Aloe Vera. I did not have the habit of using sunscreen in the past because I was too lazy to apply an additional sunscreen on top of my usual moisturiser. Due to the fact that the lotion comes with SPF, it is more convenient for people like me who is too lazy to slap on another layer of sunscreen in the early mornings.
Packaging
I have to say I am not too fond of the bottle packaging. It would be better if it is in a tube container. I have a tendency of over dispensing the product with the current bottle but I just apply the leftovers on my hands. I have noticed the hardening of the shielding lotion with SPF near the opening of the bottle. This problem only occurs in the SPF version and not the normal lotion. However, this has not affect the effects of the lotion as it still works as well.
Moreover, I feel that the overall design of the bottle can be improved. Majority of the time, people will notice products with more attractive designs and be more willing to buy and try it out. But with that said, the quality of the product is still of utmost importance.
Ingredients
I have sensitive skin and am allergy to some ingredients such as mineral oil and algae extract. With a quick glance at the ingredients list, I did not find any ingredients which I will supposedly have a negative reaction to. There are also no paraben which is a plus point. Skin MD Natural’s website also has a detailed list of the ingredients used in the products.

Overall comments
I love the fantastic oil control of these lotions and the adequate moisturising factor. It works pretty well for me as a daily facial moisturiser and hand lotion. I will continue to use the lotions due to the superb oil control. I no longer need to apply any oil controlling powder nor do I get all oily when I applied makeup. A bottle can last me for quite some time since I only use them on my face and occasionally my hands. The price might be slightly on the high side for some but for the quality I’m not complaining. I apply the lotion without SPF around my eye area when it gets too dry and so far so good, I don’t get any milia bumps around my eye area.
It is priced at SGD 29.90 / 31.90 at the local Guardians and Watsons in Singapore and USD 18 / 25 online at Skin MD Natural. Skin MD Natural has also generously offered to give a 20% discount for readers of Amour Chaleur. You can use the discount code amour when purchasing it from their website.

Ah, nice giveaway, Dayna.
Firstly, even though I’m still young, I still want to give this as a present to my mother. Hopefully she’ll like it. Now, I’ll speak about the lotion as a lady-like girl.
I like where it could get rid of acnes and all those. That would be lovely for my mother. She dislikes all her pimples and such – I guess it will be useful to her.
I don’t know how to describe it, but I like everything about it! Just except the SPF and no-SPF thing – it’s confusing!
Though, anyhow, I would like the lotion. Thank you Dayna, for this wonderful giveaway! Lovely giveaway idea!

I love your review. The mixture of regular blogs, picture blogs, and reviews is nice to see
I love the fact that the lotion has SPF in it because I’m horrible at putting lotion on my face daily. I wish I would, but I just haven’t found ‘that lotion’ that makes my skin hydrated, but not all greasy. So having SPF, I think I’d remember to start putting it on due to the sunlight
Although.. we have no sunlight here, until Spring comes.. sometime, lol.

Oohh!! this lotion sounds soo lovely! And there’s a giveaway? Awesome!! I need a lotion with SPF because darn, not only is my skin dry, am getting too much of a tan because of the HOT RAYS OF THE SUN. I love that it’s fragrance free because I really don’t like the strong smell of some and the fact that you said that it’s not oily. Not oily lotions for the win! XD hahaa

I love how you have long nails! I have long nails too and they do break but not as often as other peep’s
yes for strong nails – go us.
Although I’m not an avid beauty product fan, I enjoyed reading this post. I liked how you even gave your opinion on if the costs matched the benefits. I completely agree about the dispenser. It can tend to get messy and if that’s ever dropped on it’s head it could potentially create a mess. A tube would be much more effective and is certainly easier to clean. And the bottle design to me is a bit ugly. I would have liked to see something more flow-y and light but I wonder if that would have detracted from the medical aspects of their product. Lol, and that’s why I’m not in to designing bottles haha.

I actually really enjoyed reading that review, although it made me feel really terrible about not taking good care of my skin, especially on my face. =/ My skin is really oily too, so I also have problems with acne, but I’m too lazy to treat it.
The way you said these Skin MD lotions manage oil is really appealing to me. I hate wearing powder on my face, so not to have to wear it to hide/manage the oil would be amazing. Plus, I also have really sensitive skin, so I have to be really careful with what I use on my face. I really only use lotions and cleansers on my face that have been prescribed or approved by my dermatologist, but since you said these lotions were fine on the sensitive skin on your face, I would love to give them a try.
I’m really curious as to how Skin MD found out about you and offered to send you their lotion and samples to review. How did they?
21 February, 2010 at 11:59 am
I’m actually not sure how they found me. Maybe it’s from the other beauty reviews I wrote? They sent me an email about this and I thought there’ll be no harm trying.

hey sweetie!
sounds like a fantastic product for oil control! and the fact that you noticed your acne scars lightening makes it all the more tempting!
also wanna check with you if you found the acne.org regimen effective? i wanna have good clear skin!! =))

The acne.org regimen is so far the only “treatments” that work for me. I’ve been on the regimen for 1.5 years and it’s still effective for me. But we need to be hardworking and applying the BP at least once a day though. I stopped for 3 weeks last month and broke out quite a bit (the late nights and CNY goodies made it worse as well). If you would like to try the regimen, maybe you can get some BP from our local pharmacies and try it first?
28 February, 2010 at 2:08 pm
sounds good, dayna! what’s BP though heh
28 February, 2010 at 2:13 pm
BP is Benzoyl Peroxide, a common treatment cream for pimples and zits. I am using the 2.5% concentration which should supposedly worked the best!
I have read that anything higher (such as 5 or 10%) tends to irritate the skin and result in over-dryness.

i am suchhh a fan of moisterizers and i usually apply my aveeno day cream before applying makeup but it gets a bit dry, i have another aveeno moisterizer but that one is tooo oily ! i like that it doesnt get oily when applied makeup
SPF is also very important now so it’s great that theres SPF in it ! i think i’m going to take read more about this product on their website !

Oh, a giveaway! I hope this counts as a good entry.
I really like the products because one has sunscreen – and I love products that include sunscreen in them also because I don’t like buying separate sunscreen and adding that layer of protection on top of moisturiser. It’s also nice that their range includes a lotion without SPF – I think they would suit me more for night time and when SPF is not needed.
I find that a lot of sunscreens, though very protective, are quite greasy. This isn’t so pleasant so it’s good to hear that the lotion is not too greasy.
To be honest the packaging doesn’t bother me as I use a lot of lotions with those kinds of lids and I am used to it.

I’ve never heard of the brand before, but it does look good. My skin changes day to day and all I have is a cheap moisturiser, which makes my skin feel smothered a lot of the time. I really would like to try this out, looks like it would help…and if it helps clear acne scars then that would be awesome.
*hopes this counts as an entry* :L
Haha, the 26th of February is my birthday, and I always feel a little special when I see it written anywhere. Don’t know why, I’m weird like that. xD
20 February, 2010 at 12:14 am
I’m entering!
I like the fact that it comes with SPF. The weather here is crazy, what with the scorching sun and the dry wind. Plus I have some acne scars that need to be get rid off
i’m definitely going to try my luck now.
20 February, 2010 at 12:08 am
Sounds like a great product!
I use acne stuff too and it ALWAYS makes my face dry to the max.
Right now I use Kiehl’s Moisturizer and it’s worked alright. It makes my face oily and I don’t like it one bit. If this product doesn’t make my face oily, I might as well try it.
Whooahs, you can see your acne scars disappearing? This is like a miracle worker then!
I must try it soon! :P Thanks for the recommendation!

I’ve never heard of this brand before, but I like how you said it has great oil-control properties. I have combination skin myself, and most facial lotions I use (even the ones designed for combination skins) leave me with a shiny forehead and nose at the end of the day. I’d love to try out a bottle and see if it does control oil yet retain moisture as well for my skin as a it does for yours
PS. Does this comment count as a giveaway entry? Please say yes!
19 February, 2010 at 11:11 pm
I’m sure you will love the oil controlling effect these lotions have!
Yes! This counts as an entry.
