New Monalisa Glasses

New Monalisa Glasses

Before I start one of my little “talks of the day” again. Have a look at the tiny shoes on the left. It was a gift from mum when we went “exploring” last Friday. We walked from Lavender (to collect my new passport) all the way to Bugis and we chance about this pottery shop that sell beautiful potteries and household wares. I just happen to saw this pair of porcelain shoes on sales at SGD 4.90 and it’s a beauty. I don’t wear such heels (to be exact, I don’t really wear heels at all) so I think I’ll have one of these at home to admire. :D

And surprise surprise… I got myself new glasses with the GST credits from the government. I’m contributing to the economy (this is my excuse for everything now). :p I got these beautiful Monalisa glasses for SGD 200 (click on the thumbnail to view the full size photo), I love them even though they make me look like a nerd, the lenses are a bit too large for my face but please tell me I look okay. :lame: I am starting to feel that the frame is a bit too large but I still love it a lot. It has little crystals at the side. The colour is wrong in the photo though, it’s more metallic purplish pink rather than red and it isn’t as bright as the photo looks. Mr Chewy isn’t going to like it. He hate me in framed glasses. I use to wear frame-less glasses in the past. I place the nerdy photo of myself under the cut, I don’t wish to scare you off you know. ;)

Please be forewarn that the “talk of the day” starts here. :pirate: Okay, so I noticed I hadn’t been blogging this week. Let’s just say nothing much happen for the week other than constantly mugging for the exams. I wish examinations would just disappear from the education sector. I would prefer students being evaluated based on projects, team work and their characters rather than testing how good they are at memorising names and numbers. That’s the thing about studying Finance (and maybe some other subjects as well). For example in CF and POBF, there are tons of models to study and their names are darn hard to remember. Jensen Mecking, Brickley, Netter, John Linter and the list just goes on. There are so many names that I couldn’t remember which is which and even if I did, I mess up the years associated with each of the models. A good student doesn’t necessary mean that they have a good memory for such things. I doubt we ever need to know these when we are in the workforce in the future (unless I’m working as a teacher in that area of course).

It’s pathetic when I think of the way education is. :( When we are taking a private degree, the only strength your lecturers can see in you is how hard working you are and how good your memory is. They don’t ever ever realise other strengths in you. The tag line is “if you don’t understand, memorise it”. I mean what’s the point? I don’t get it. I regretted choosing this path. It’s making me dislike school, making me doubt the existence of humanity. I don’t enjoy studying now. All these hardcore memorisation work is taking a toll on me, it has taken away all the joys of schooling, learning new things and interacting with people. I’m not learning, I’m just throwing those stuff into a human hard disk. And can someone tell me what’s the purpose of this? Please enlighten me. I don’t even know why I’m doing what I’m doing now.

Oo, I really like those shoes!
Right now, I’m taking courses where I don’t really have to do a lot of memorization, which is good because as long as I understand the concept, I’ll survive. I agree with you on the fact that students should be judged on their projects and not on their memorizing skills. Then again, it might help to have a few things memorized, although I personally don’t think anybody should just resort to that method if they don’t understand what it is they’re learning.

I like your new glasses, they suit you :) Congrats! I also want new ones :P

Those are some lovely new glasses! :) I wish I could’ve had some like that when I need new glasses, but they didn’t had any of those spiffy colours :(

Is that the GST offset you are talking about? I just learned about it last week. I saw the letter than my bf got. 2 x 200 dollars but I think that he has to wait a few months before he receives the money.

You look good in your new glasses. wow. I love the crystals at the side! Mine are black frames that are way too common now. I’ll stick with contact lenses. :)

Yup, that is the one I’m talking about. It’s paid twice, once in 1st March and another in 1st June, provided it is registered on and before 20th February if I’m not wrong. :)

I’ve never tried black frames before, is it common? I seldom see people wearing black frames now. ;) I’m too lazy for contact lenses, I find it very troublesome and it’s not good for my eyes in the long run, so I guess I’ll stick with glasses being the lazy bum. :P

Who says you look nerdy in those glasses? Seriously, I thought it would look gazillion time worse when you said it makes you look really nerdy but no, you look perfect in it! I like the crystal-studded sides of the frame, and you look fetching in it (of course, without it you still are :p heh). I would call that a great choice of frame!

Oh, and I am not a really big fan of the education system, even when I’m in university. We still do things the route learning way – it’s just less obvious because although we learn all the applications and stuff, we’re expected to memorize quite a lot of stuff (well, what can I expect from a biological sciences major), and I get mixed up with all the names, models and experiments as well. We’re expected to memorize and recite the conditions, steps and results of each experiments, and even know how to decipher that stupid cryptic DNA crystallography photo to deduce the structure :twist: bwah! *facepalm*

On the lighter side, our teacher says they expect us to forget a lot of stuff and we’re graded via the bell curve :)

Lots of people, say Mr Chewy and my sister? ;) Thanks so much Teddy, you just made my day! I just happen to think that they are the perfect glasses as well.

Finance is similar I guess. We are supposed to memorise the assumptions, the research, conclusion and empirical evidence. I wish my lecturer would tell me that but no, he said we should remember all those stuff in the study guide. He also mentioned that those notes in the study guide is not sufficient and we should start memorising the ones in the textbook as well. I am going to bang the wall soon. :lame: I’m not sure if we are graded on the bell curve since it’s my first time taking a UOL exam but I assume we are since one of my lecturer did mention that they wouldn’t pass everyone. :(

      • avatar

I think Mr Chewy is just joking – deep inside he might be thinking “Zomg nice glasses” you know, guys are like that! Hah. Teasing and stuff.

Oh, same thing here. Our lecturers tell us that “don’t think our lecture notes are complicated means that everything will come out from the notes themselves” – meaning that we’re expected to read up the textbooks. We were even asked to read certain science journals. They can run up to 20 pages for a small topic… what a killer!

I think for most university assessment they grade you using the bell curve, so your grade depends on your performance relative to the ‘norm’ of your batch. So if your batch have exceptionally lazy people, you’re in luck *bwahaha* Since your lecturers said that they won’t pass anyone, my best guess will be a bell curve since using the curve will not pass everyone :)

Cute frames – never seen something like that before.
I agree with you on the examinations part. You can’t imagine how often I ranted about that here at my uni. We have all those practical exams we have to complete BEFORE we are even allowed to the exam at the end of a semester. But the practical exams – which take up all the time – aren’t mentioned in the report card anywhere. It’s quite frustrating… I’m glad I’m done with uni now!

Thank you. :) I think I’ll be so relieved on the day I graduate from university, it would be a huge load of my back. But that is not in another 1.5 years time.

Loving your new frames! I want to get a pair of red frames just because it looks quite funky. =P

    • avatar

I use to have another half frame red glasses. It’s quite cool actually. This one is more purplish pink rather than red. The flash might have caused some colour distortion in the photo. ;)

  11. avatar

You look adorable!! Those frames are awesome. :)

And I very much agree when it comes to education. I really think the whole frame work of how we educate needs to be reworked. We need less courses on random history and more life skills. Everyone should be taught about balancing a budget, doing taxes, how to keep good credit… and there should be more emphasis on finding your natural strengths and choosing a trade that fits that.

And post secondary education is too expensive… the world talks about how there arn’t enough people educated enough to keep the economy strong.. well, who can really afford it?

    We need a revolution!!!!11

Thank you! I thought I look a bit nerdy though, but adorable is a nice word too. :P

I totally agree with you. We should be learning important life skills such as how to work smart and fostering good relationship with the people around us for work and personal communication purposes. One thing the current education system in my country lacks is the lack of educating the children regarding courtesy, moral and discipline. From some of my previous post, you can see how much I’m annoyed by the kids, they really need to be taught a lesson.

Local education is rather affordable in my country. But private degrees like mine are very expensive unless we are on scholarships. :surprised:

Aww you look cute in it actually :D

I hate it when people memorize instead of understanding. It would actually help if the lecturers actually looked at other strong points as well rather than our academic abilities. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, and so they can’t expect us to be ‘ordinary’ by forcing us to be ‘smart’ like everyone else. I hope that made sense

As for me, though I understand concepts easily, my memorizing abilities are really bad. Thank goodness I can still cope though.

Being called cute is much much better than being called a nerd. T_T

Sometimes I wonder how anyone can understand history. My memory is deteriorating as I get older. :(
