There’s isn’t anything happening in my life now. My life feels so unrealistic. I blame it on my studies, it labels me as a person without a life which I can experience and love. I’ll continue with this story another day. I’ve a strong urge to post about all the wows and woos on the Internet (personal opinion, please be caution), internet browsers, copying comments to the clipboard, captcha issues and here goes…
I downloaded Google Chrome yesterday. The interface was surprising light and sleek. Loading was pretty fast for me as well which is a plus point. However, at the moment I feel that it isn’t comparable with Firefox due to the lack of add-ons available. It is those add-ons that make Firefox so convenient and a pleasure to use.
I still hadn’t figured out why some many people (specifically 12.2% of my overall visitors) are still using Internet Explorer 6. I’m only complaining because my layout looks screw up in IE 6 and I don’t plan to fix it.
I tested mine on Google Chrome and thankfully it looks normal as well. We should be moving forward, there’s a new version so the old one should be presuming flawed. I understand that IE 7 is slow for many people. That’s why we should be using an “environmental” friendly browsers like Firefox and not the devil. Pollution is not good for the environment, ya?
Why should we copy our comments to the clipboard before submitting it? I think some people might be asking this question. I am doing a bit of promotion for Teddy’s latest tutorial because I find it very useful.
I always copy my comments before clicking on the submit button for various reasons.
I might be seeing an error page and my comments did not get submitted. This can be due to the internet connection, those stupid captcha images that even a human couldn’t figure out the wordings on it or whatever other reasons. When I click on the back button or return to the previous page, the comments is gone. Do I have to retype the comment? Can I still remember what I’ve type. Isn’t it a waste of time? I might as well buy some insurance by copying the comments over to the clipboard. Some might argued that we have keyboard short cuts such as ctrl-a (to highlight all text) and ctrl-c (to copy). This is true, but my fingers do get tired of continuously ctrl-a-ing and ctrl-c-ing whenever I post a comment. I prefer to do it with 1 click and reduce the possibility of having my fingers cramp. But that might be just me.

Bad Captcha
If you are using captcha, at least use something that a human can read. Sometimes I hate captchas because I can’t read it at all. Is it case sensitive? And and o and 0 is always very confusing. Overlapping text? I don’t have supersonic eyes either. Don’t give a maths equation that only people who study algebra can calculate the answer. I’m posting a comment, I’m not getting a maths lesson so there is no need for sin, cos, square root kind of equation. Simple addition, subtraction or multiplication would be sufficient.

Description Icons
I added descriptions icons for the articles and tutorials section. Articles with comments open for discussion will have a rainbow speech bubble icon and graphic tutorials will have a paintbrush icon. I didn’t want to segregate the tutorials because I don’t have a long list of them.
I drew the paintbrush icons yesterday in 10 minutes, looks a bit rough though but I hope it looks like a paintbrush.
Let me know what you think of this idea. Oh and did I mention that I just installed SlimBox 2? It’s a lot faster with a nicer design interface and has validated CSS as compared to the Shutter Reloaded that comes with NextGen.
I shall end here today, part 2 will be up when I’ve the time to type it out.

Ok… in the past when firefox is 1.5 or 2 I actually downloaded it? But at that time IE is still too popular… So after trying out for about 1 week (I guess?) and I uninstalled it. LOL Now Firefox FTW!
21 February, 2009 at 5:12 pm
IE is facing diminishing marginal returns now.
So much for studying economics. Haha, Firefox is way faster than IE. Plus IE usually spoils the computer after a while due to the spywares on the Internet and it tends to install those toolbars automatically. I can’t surf without my trusty adblock plus in Firefox. I detest IE!
21 February, 2009 at 10:50 pm
there are so much things to tweak with firefox, now it display instantly (prev on IE there would be a lag to display the page out) which is I like
21 February, 2009 at 11:15 pm
Yup, the bonus for Firefox is its extensive plugin collection for customisation. Google Chrome is very light and fast as well. Maybe when there’s an expanding add-ons collection, I might just jump ship.
Firefox might still lag and not “smooth scroll” when the page is full of JS like the WordPress administrative panel.
21 February, 2009 at 10:30 am
Ugh, I hate IE. Why can’t people realise that Firefox is much better. The worst part is that most of the people I know don’t dare to change to Firefox, because they’re so skeptical. I seriously don’t get why. I would be more skeptical of IE. But I guess that’s just me.
21 February, 2009 at 5:48 am
*sigh*
I’m horribly in hate to IE…no matter what. It’s just…so…ew. And it messes up my codes left and right. I hate it..ahem, correction, highly dislike it.
20 February, 2009 at 3:20 am
Copying your comment to the clipboard is a very good idea.. I always forget to do it and on the rare occasions that something happens I always get so damn agree.. And if it’s on a site where I am not actually interested in commenting, but just have to (through despair.nu) I want to physically harm someone if anything goes wrong and I have to re-write it
20 February, 2009 at 12:21 am
Likewise, I’ve downloaded Google Chrome onto my laptop. Although I am still using Firefox more partially because I am used to it, and also because I have all my extensions and bookmarks there waiting for me. (Sure, Google Chrome imports all my bookmarks for me, but … I still prefer the way things are organized in Firefox.)
I have to agree that it’s sleep and lightweight, though.
19 February, 2009 at 8:18 pm
I used to use Google Chrome but I just dislike it because it likes to cache the pages.. D:
I have IE 6 (but I seldom use it).. because it is faster than IE 7
I prefer IE 6 to IE 7. I haven’t try out IE 8 yet, how about you?
Agreed with the captcha thing. I always key in the wrong “password” and then, I have to go back and key it in again. The worst thing is, my comments are gone!
So, whenever I see captcha, I’ll just leave the website even if I do have something to say about the topic. There’re a lot of “things” to prevent spams, not just the captcha.
*Checking out Teddy’s tutorial*
Edit:// I think the icon you drawn in 10 minutes does look like an airbrush
and it’s very cute too! :3
19 February, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Really? I’m not too sure about the caching feature since I only tried it for less than 10 minutes but it’s faster as compared to IE for me. True, I prefer Maths captcha with simple additions or subtractions. But I think captcha is the “in” thing now. So many websites are having those.
His tutorial is very good although I uses the input button and specify a height for it instead of using a div (what Teddy is doing) to fix the flash problem in IE. I can’t seems to copy the comment to my clipboard on his site, will check with him when his active on Twitter.
Edit: My adblock is blocking his flash, hence it’s not working.
I’ve added an exception rule for it so that the copy to clipboard feature is working.
IE always have special problems that other browsers do not have.
Thanks, I was afraid it doesn’t look like a brush.
20 February, 2009 at 10:12 am
Oh yeah! There’s the math captcha! But still.. I prefer no captcha
My elder sister is using GC but I’m still using Opera.. I don’t know why but when I visit my WP Dashboard using Firefox, everything is lagging (it’s like, when you scroll up or down, the page doesn’t move smoothly). I used to love Firefox very much but now, OPera
(because I can block all popups hehe)
True, IE always have the problems that other browsers do not have
but because of it, my coding skill improved. I wanted my site to be cross browser viewable so I kept google-ing at that time.
tsk tsk, your favicon looks weird.. there’s a black background behind it (which makes it looks.. ugly).. no offense
20 February, 2009 at 6:08 pm
The smooth scrolling might be due to the WordPress administrative panel being very bloated. I have that problem as well in the past. I switch to Fluency Admin 2 for my dashboard and everything is running faster and smoother. I’m not going to use the default admin anymore. It loads really slowly and I’m impatient.
Firefox also allows the blocking of all pop ups, no? Haha, it’s because I’m using a transparent PNG image and it loads black background in Opera. If you look at it in other browsers like Firefox or IE, it loads as transparent background. Anyway, I change it to a GIF already so that the black background doesn’t shows up on Opera.
22 February, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Oh, now I understand it (about the favicon).
I have little plugins installed in WordPress, 6 of them if I’m not mistaken. It’s not lagging in Opera so
I’ve tried the plugin but it’s still loading slowly in Firefox
22 February, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Wow, only 6? I’ve like at least 20 installed. I’m too dependent on those to keep my site running.
Ah I see, that’s weird. Firefox and Google Chrome is faster for me as compared to Opera. IE is the slowest though.
22 February, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Hmmmm, what about trying out Google Gears for WP2.7? I think there’s an option to activate it or something. Not very sure though.
Google Gears will store the commonly accessed files on your cache so the dashboard will load gazillion times faster than without it.
24 February, 2009 at 6:04 pm
@Dayna: Firefox used to be the fastest browser for me (before I install Opera), I have no idea why it slows down.. I think after the release of Firefox 3.. there’re too much new features (some are not necessary) for me
@TeddY: I’ve tried Google Gears too, but still it’s lagging
21 February, 2009 at 1:20 am
One thing about Firefox is that it lags when too many things are loading at the same time. I couldn’t replicate this problem in Chrome so I will happily assume here that it’s Firefox’s problem?
The WordPress dashboard is pretty cluttered – if you have plugins installed, it’s a miniature labyrinth you’re loading, so it’s quite normal to find that FF is struggling to load and churn out the whole page for you. Whenever I load my dashboard in FF, I will just take a deep breath and probably shift my attention to something else (like my TweetDeck, haha) before coming back to Firefox.
Regarding the botched favicon thing, I think it’s because Opera has a background image for all favicons, and since Dayna is using one with PNG transparency, part of the background will show up, spoiling the appearance. That’s Opera’s fault because even when FF3 allows transparent PNG for favicons, they keep the tab backgrounds clean so as not to interfere with the appearance of the favicons
19 February, 2009 at 9:43 am
I tried using Google Chrome for a while, but I was just so comfortable with Firefox that it was hard to switch permanently.
I usually type my comments in Notepad (lol) while reading the entry, then copy-paste it into the comment box. Every once in a while when I don’t do that, it seems that something goes wrong and the comment disappears :P
My favourite captchas are basic addition.
19 February, 2009 at 10:16 am
I would switch with they have the necessary addons such as the ad blocker etc. A pity they don’t at the moment. Wow, why didn’t I thought of that in the past. I’m always annoyed when my comments didn’t get through and have to retype it all over again.
19 February, 2009 at 9:13 am
Copy to clipboard is a good idea, although I would usually do that on my own. I don’t like it when it auto-copies since I may be doing something else at the same time. Hahaha.
Captchas, bad or good, are just an annoyance to me. I wished people could find a better alternative to captchas.
The icons are real cute. For me I don’t think they make too much of a difference though.
19 February, 2009 at 10:18 am
I don’t think it would copied the other things, only the text on the textarea if I’m not wrong? I agree, some captchas has usability issues.
Thank you. They don’t make a difference to me either but I thought it might make a difference to some people.
19 February, 2009 at 2:59 am
Thanks for the plug, Dayna
I’m eternally thankful for that… and I hope the tutorial is of good use to you, heh.
Speaking of bad captchas, I’ve seen words that are clumped together and it expects me to decipher what is it totally about. Clicking on alternative ways (like requesting a sound file to be played) gives me either nothing or a muffled, computer-generated sound that I still cannot decipher. That’s why so many people are reverting to simple human/non-human tests – randomly served and simple math questions or easy questions like ‘What is the colour of grass’. The downside of the latter is that there is a language barrier to cross.
I downloaded Google Chrome a few weeks after it was released and I must say that I like it a lot! The new, sleek and Vista-esque visual appeal is definitely a huge drawing point. Plus, it’s even better than IE8 (which is yet to be released). However, I’m still sticking to Firefox for the moment being :P hah. Oh yea, and there’s this incognito window in Google Chrome (Ctrl + Shift + N), which does not record your browsing histories and data. I have no idea what is it for, but maybe it gives you a tad bit more privacy.
The brush icon looks so nice! I couldn’t believe that you churned it out under 10 minutes. WOAH!
19 February, 2009 at 10:20 am
No problem Teddy.
Ya, like 2 words overlapping each other. I usually just refresh and hope an image which I can read turns up. I feel that IE is always not a good option. Google Chrome is way lighter and sleeker. Firefox is a must have with all those addons for customisation. I think it might be for public computers? I think I would make use of that if I’m using the PC in school.
Oh and Teddy, you really should have a tutorial on how to post WP comments via AJAX. I can’t figure out those plugins.
21 February, 2009 at 1:17 am
IE is not very web-standards friendly – it’s something that every designer hates. Even the new IE8 that Microsoft is working on is not as perfect as Firefox 3 or Chrome. How tragic!
For AJAX commenting system, the one you see on my site is actually part of the WordPress Thread Comment installation. It is not meant to be integrated with the in-built WordPress comment reply system (the one you’re currently using), so it’s an either-or situation for you. When WP2.7 was released, I faced this internal struggle between opting for WP’s reply system and WP Thread Comment’s. I picked the latter since I’ve been rather reliant on it for comment replies and notifications, heh
If I’m not mistaken, AJAX Edit Comments does come with a comment posting AJAX library.
21 February, 2009 at 11:10 am
I see. The AJAX Edit Comment plugin doesn’t come with the feature to post comments via AJAX though and the other plugins doesn’t seems very compatible with the latest WordPress.
21 February, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Hmmmm, I remembered Ember from TehCPeng.net is able to modify a plugin such that it is compatible with WP2.7 and with the new comment reply feature, on his photoblog. You might want to ask him about it
19 February, 2009 at 2:17 am
I tried out Google Chrome when it just came out, and I remember really liking it, but then for some reason I uninstalled it. Hmmm, time to try it out again I say
I really dislike captcha on comment forms. I read somewhere that spambots are finding ways to crack the captcha codes, hence why we have those really-hard-to read ones now that humans can barely decipher.
19 February, 2009 at 12:41 am
I haven’t really heard of any feedback for Google Chrome but I’ll check it out. If you love Firefox, I would recommend trying out Flock, it’s made by Mozilla as well and I am LOVING it!!! A few features it has more over than Firefox, but the only thing I don’t know if whether or not it has good security features such as add-pop up and spyware downloads.
I love highslide more better than slimbox 2 but it’s only because it’s a bit more convenient with my picasa gallery plugin.
18 February, 2009 at 10:27 pm
Thanks for the review on Google Chrome, I think I’m going to download it and try it out.
My college still uses Internet Explorer and its a real pain when it crashes. It has no “restore session” option like Firefox so you have to try and remember what you were doing at the time.
I love Firefox because like you said there are loads of add-ons that make it even easier to use. Also, you can customize it with skins to match your tastes.
I don’t have Captcha on my site because it can be quite annoying for visitors. I moderate my comments to help prevent spam.
I love the “Copy to Clipboard” feature. I remember once when I was leaving a long comment on a blog, I clicked submit and there was an error. It was really frustrating because I couldn’t remember what I has put in the first place!
The paintbrush is a great idea. It keeps all your tutorials in one place and categorizes them. *thumbs up*
xx <3
18 February, 2009 at 10:49 pm
No problem. I think it has a really nice interface, a pity its lack of add-ons and customisation. IE is a devil, we should be friendly to the environment and start using Firefox. It’s so frustrating to know that my site screwed up in IE 6 and I can’t fix it.
I have quite a few experiences with that as well. I can’t remember what I wrote in the first place and decides not to comment again after the 404 error.
And I’m always lazy to ctrl-a and ctrl-c, my finger is not that flexible to keep repeating that action. A simple click is fabulous!
Thanks for the comments, I was unsure of whether it’s a good idea to add the icons as some people might find it messy and unorganised.
